Laboratory research indicates that ibogaine interacts with systems that include NMDA, kappa-opioid, sigma, nicotinic, and serotonin transporter sites. The significance of each interaction in humans, and how they combine, remains unsettled.
NMDA-related activity is often discussed because glutamate signaling is involved in learning and neural adaptation. But receptor-binding findings alone do not show a clinical outcome.
